The concept for Bait House Brewery arose from the property’s long-standing use as a bait and tackle shop. Fondly remembered by many Sandusky fisherman, Herb’s Bait Shop served the community for almost seventy-five years. Now in loving tribute Herb’s stands Sandusky’s first microbrewery, Bait House Brewery. Our Brewery draws on Sandusky’s long-time connection not only with the fishing industry, but maritime life generally. Completely handmade, each style of our beer will delight those going out for a day’s fishing, and fine craft beer lovers alike. Remember, there’s “Nothin’ Fishy About It!”
THE BREWER
Our beer is brewed in-house, by our head brewer, owner and brewmeister, Michael McGookey. His degree in Biochemistry from Miami University, and years of lab work help him meticulously create every recipe from scratch. He strives to focus on recipes following the traditional German Purity Laws. All our beers are thoroughly and thoughtfully crafted to delight those going out for a day's fishing, and fine craft beer lovers alike.

You could say that Michael and Alivia McGookey (co-owners, operators, brewers, and jacks-of-all trades at Bait House Brewery) are a young Sandusky power couple. But that is not who they aspire to be. Anyone who has come to know them recognizes that only through countless hours of hard work (and with keen vision) they have created a relaxing eating and entertainment experience that is enjoyed by young and old (and canine friends) alike. The vision of the owners in combining the concepts of the atmosphere of “Margaritaville meets Ernst Hemingway” is relayed in the Brewery’s slogans: “Come as you are” and “Nothin’ fishy about it”. If you are looking for a great eating and drinking experience in a relaxing environment, Bait House Brewery is the place to be.
